Over 100 species of birds have been positively identified in this birdwatcher's paradise. As it supports various habitats (Forests, grasslands, rocky terrain, dams and an impending wetland), the serious birdwatcher has the opportunity of spotting birdlife across the board. Besides the most common small to medium species, the more spectacular species such as widows, whydas, shrikes, herons and nesting pairs of redbilled wood hoopoes, as well as malachite kingfisher can also be found here. Nocturnal birds: Various species of nightjars abound. A number of owls also reside here: Numerous sightings of the giant eagle owl, grass owl and the spotted eagle owl have been reported, and patient watchers will be treated to the sight of hunting black eagles. Tawny eagles, brown snake eagles, crowned eagles, goshawks and falcons to name but a few are also regularly spotted. Oom Koos is a veritable mine of information as well as somewhat of an expert on a variety of subjects, and birdwatchers are welcome to compare their notes with him. The experience will be well remembered.Horseback is one of the most natural ways to gamewatch, and if you keep a look out, you'll be able to see springbok, rooihartebees, black wildebeest, zebra, duiker, steenbok, impala, blesbok, ostrich, guineafowl, jackal, red-footed hares, meercat, porcupine and small carnivores. The jackal, red-footed hares and porcupine are shy and nocturnal; but the herds of buck have grown used to both horses and people, and will stay to let you watch them, providing you don't go too close, or chase them. |
